Can a Hearing Aid Help You?

ByAnders Abadie

For many people suffering from auditory loss, the hearing aid has been a lifesaver -- in some cases, quite literally. A life without one of the most essential of the five senses is a difficult life, indeed. It takes losing your ability to hear to realize how much of your perception of the world is dependent upon it. Even mild auditory loss can lead to a lot of problem simply functioning in the world. When it comes to communicating, listening, or even enjoying some of your favorite forms of entertainment, the ability to hear is essential. Here are some steps you can take to determine whether or not an assistive listening device may be your best bet for a brighter future.

Evaluation

Your first step should be to get in touch with an audiologist for a thorough evaluation of your ears. You can usually get this done through your primary care physician if you have insurance concerns. He will be able to bring in an audiologist or refer you to someone you can go to for a test. Don't confuse this professional evaluation with common ads for free evaluations. You'll see these pop up at various businesses, usually in an attempt to sell you something. These screenings merely measure your range and will not give you a precise look at your auditory loss. Go through a doctor for a real evaluation that can actually help you make some difficult decisions.

Choose a Dealer Based on Reputation

If you can get your audiologist to recommend a hearing aid dealer or store to you, this is probably the best way to go about finding one. If you don't have any luck on that front, do some research in your area and find a store that is licensed and has a great reputation. Read some online reviews and see what others are saying. At a precarious time like this, the last thing you want to walk into is a lion's den of commission-hungry salespeople. You need a staff that is more concerned with making sure each customer gets what they need and not what makes them the highest profit.

Get Informed

You should take the time to do some of your own basic research before you visit a hearing aid center. Find some good forums for the auditory impaired online. Within a few minutes, you'll be reading thread after thread of real people talking about their experiences with various models. You'll find certain models repeated time and time again, both in a good light and a bad one. This information is more valuable than anything else when trying to make a decision for yourself. Spend a few days or even weeks doing this research, and you'll be able to make a much better choice when it comes to buying your first hearing aid.
