What Types Of Fats Are There?

ByKaren Wentworth

Fats can be dangerous and somewhat ugly for your health and your look. These substances greatly affect your health and your weight. So, what better way to help than knowing the things you are struggling with?

Saturated Fats

A lot people think that saturated fats are dangerous to their health. It is true that if the intake of these fats is not limited it might be dangerous. But overall, Saturated Fats are a good source of energy for our body to function. They are generally found in meat and dairy. It would be better that the animal meat you use was raised on corn or grain and buy the leanest cuts to assure you of better quality Saturated Fats. These fats play a great vital role in the growth of your bones and constitute at least 50 percent of your cell membranes. They also help lower lipoprotein and protect your liver from toxins like alcohol and such. If you are a vegan, there are also tropical fruits you can consume to get your daily dose of Saturated Fats like avocado, palm and coconut which have naturally high content of Saturated Fats.

Unsaturated Fats

Recent research has found that unsaturated fats have extremely great benefits to the heart. They reduce the risk of heart disease and blood clotting and also help decrease inflammation and regulate your body's blood pressure. They also lower the bad kind of cholesterol which is low density lipids and increase high density lipids or good cholesterol in the body. Good cholesterol is produced in the liver to help transport fat-soluble nutrients to the different cells of the body and help repair your blood vessels.

Monounsaturated Fats

These fats are healthy fats and just like Unsaturated Fats help reduce bad cholesterol in your blood and avoid problems such as cardiac arrest and other heart related complications. Monounsaturated fats are typically found in oils like olive oil, sunflower oil, sesame oil, nut oil, nuts, olives and seeds. These fats will also help the development of your body cells.

Polyunsaturated Fats

Polyunsaturated fats have two sides to it. There is a positive effect which comes from the consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet and a negative effect which is the result of overconsumption of too many Omega-6 fats that would cause an imbalance on your omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the diet. The typical ratio is 1:1 but with the Western type of diet that people are currently using the ratio has ballooned to a range of 50:1 to 70:1. Chronic illnesses like cancer, heart diseases, arthritis, obesity, depression and etc. are attributed to the dominance of Omega-6 in people's diet. Avoid using products that use too much sunflower and safflower oil as well as processed foods and corn/grain fed animal meat and dairy. It is recommended that you consume deep-sea fish and fish oil and grass-fed animal meat and dairy products.

Trans Fatty Acids

This is a synthetically made fat which was specially structured to help reduce the intake of saturated fat in the body. They were also designed to increase the shelf life of boxed products. Due to the foreign-structure of Trans Fatty Acids, it has become a dangerous fat to the human system and has become detrimental to the functions of the cell membranes and drastically changed the cholesterol levels in the body. Trans fats are usually found in deep fried products and chips, crackers and especially in margarine. Be careful with products which use Hydrogenated oil and fractionated oil. Remember, to much fats in the body is not healthy ask your doctor about it.
